A pizza dish is a small parabolic satellite antenna, typically 18 to 31 inches in diameter, designed to receive Ku-band signals from direct broadcast satellite (DBS) systems. The name comes from its flat, round appearance and compact domestic footprint, which resembles a pizza. These dishes operate in the 11.7 to 12.2 GHz frequency band and are installed on residential rooftops or exterior walls to pull down television and data signals from geostationary satellites positioned over the equator.

The defining characteristic of a pizza dish is its small size relative to older C-band satellite dishes, which could measure 6 to 10 feet across. Ku-band's higher frequency allows adequate gain and directional sensitivity from a much smaller aperture, making pizza dishes economically practical for mass consumer deployment. A typical installation involves a single low-noise block downconverter (LNB) mounted at the dish's focal point, connected via coaxial cable to an indoor receiver box that decodes the signal.

Practical deployment and limitations

Pizza dishes became prevalent in North America during the 1990s and 2000s as DBS operators DirecTV and Dish Network rolled out service. The smaller form factor, typically weighing 3 to 10 pounds, made installation faster and less visually intrusive than its C-band predecessor. However, Ku-band's susceptibility to rain fade remains a real operational constraint, especially in humid climates; heavy precipitation can cause signal dropout lasting minutes to hours, since water droplets at this frequency absorb microwave energy significantly.

Proper azimuth, elevation, and polarization alignment are critical during installation. A pizza dish pointed even 0.5 degrees off target will experience substantial signal loss because the beam width at Ku-band is narrow. Multi-satellite reception, common in modern systems, requires either a motorized dish or a fixed dish with a multi-LNB cluster to receive from different orbital slots simultaneously.

The term "pizza dish" remains informal shop language among installers and technicians but has become less frequent as DBS penetration matured and alternative delivery methods (cable, streaming, terrestrial) fragmented the market. Understanding its limitations, rain fade, pointing precision, ice/snow accumulation, remains relevant for anyone servicing installed base equipment or diagnosing reception problems in remote or rural areas where satellite service remains the primary or only broadcast option.
