plane: the hand tool that shaves wood flat and smooth

A plane is a hand tool that removes thin shavings of wood to flatten, smooth, or shape a surface. It consists of a blade (or iron) set at a shallow angle inside a sole, either wooden or metal. The sole rides across the wood grain while the blade, typically made of tool steel or high-carbon steel, cuts a ribbon-thin layer. The depth of cut is controlled by adjusting how far the blade protrudes below the sole, usually via a screw or lever mechanism.

The most common variants are the jack plane, jointer plane, and smoothing plane, which differ mainly in sole length and blade width. A jack plane (around 15 inches long) removes stock quickly and flattens work in a hurry; a jointer plane (20 to 24 inches) straightens edges and faces over longer distances; a smoothing plane (8 to 9 inches) takes final shavings and produces a burnished finish. Specialty planes like the block plane, rabbet plane, and molding plane are designed for specific cuts: end grain, rabbets, and decorative profiles respectively.

Success depends on blade sharpness, sole flatness, and grain direction. A dull blade tears grain and requires excessive pressure. A sole that is warped or out of true produces uneven surfaces no matter the blade condition. Wood grain runs in one direction; planing against the grain lifts the wood fibers and causes tearout, while planing with the grain produces clean shavings. Grain direction varies within a single board, so orientation matters constantly.

Why it is called a plane

The name comes from the Latin planus, meaning flat or level. The tool's purpose is to make surfaces plane, or flat and even. This etymology is shared across Romance languages and has been applied to the woodworking tool since at least the medieval period.

In industrial production, the hand plane has largely been replaced by machines: thickness planers, jointer-planers, and sanders do bulk work faster and more uniformly. The hand plane survives because it gives the craftsperson direct feedback, requires no power source, and can handle grain, knots, and figured wood that machines sometimes choke on. It remains essential for fitting, final dressing, and work in tight spaces or on irregular edges.
