A point heater is a localized heating apparatus mounted directly on or near a railway switch (called points in British usage) to prevent ice, snow, and frost from accumulating on the moving components. Because switches must move freely to divert trains between tracks, any accumulation of frozen precipitation renders them inoperable, potentially trapping trains or forcing service disruptions. The heater maintains a temperature high enough to melt snow as it falls and prevent water refreezing on the switch mechanism.
Most point heaters operate on electricity or steam. Electric versions typically use resistance heating elements mounted inside a protective shroud directed at the switch blades, stock rails, and movable point components. Steam-heated versions circulate pressurized steam through pipes laid beneath or alongside the switch assembly. The choice depends on what infrastructure already exists at the depot or station: steam systems integrate readily where locomotive servicing generates plentiful steam, while electric heaters suit electrified routes with access to reliable power supplies.
Failure modes and field problems
The most common operational failure is inadequate coverage. A heater positioned too far from the actual moving parts may warm the general area without preventing ice formation in the critical gaps where switch blades meet stock rails. Thermostatic controls can malfunction, either running continuously and wasting energy or cycling insufficiently in very cold conditions. Clogged or ruptured steam pipes on older installations leave portions of the switch mechanism unheated.
