Polymeric sand is a dry blend of kiln-dried silica sand, typically 80 to 90 mesh, mixed with powdered polymer binders and sometimes additives like anti-caking agents or fungicides. When water is applied, the polymers activate and form a rigid but slightly flexible joint. It is designed to fill the gaps between concrete pavers, clay brick, or natural stone in applications like patios, walkways, and driveways.

The polymer component is usually polyurethane, acrylic, or silica-based. These binders require moisture to cure properly, typically taking 24 to 48 hours to reach full strength depending on humidity and temperature. Unlike standard sand, which remains loose and can be displaced by foot traffic or water erosion, polymeric sand binds in place and resists washout during rain or hose cleaning. Joint widths of 1 to 3 inches are typical, and the material is applied by sweeping the dry blend across the paver surface, then misting with water until the sand fully absorbs and slumps slightly below the paver edge.

Common problems include incomplete activation if the sand does not receive enough water, or over-watering which can cause bleeding, where polymers rise to the surface and haze the paver face. Improper grading of the sand granules can lead to weak joints that ravel under pressure. Some formulations are sensitive to the chloride content of water; saltwater or highly chlorinated sources may interfere with curing. Fungicides in some products can stain pavers if not rinsed thoroughly.

Variants and choosing the product

Standard polymeric sand is the baseline for residential applications. Polymeric dusts, with finer particles, are used for tighter joint widths down to 1/8 inch. Some products claim to remain workable longer during installation, while others prioritize rapid curing. Colored polymeric sand is available to match or contrast with paver color, though matching is difficult and samples should always be tested in situ under actual weather conditions.

Polymeric sand sits between conventional sand (which is cheap but migrates) and polyurethane joint sealers (which are more expensive and designed for movement accommodation). It works best on stable base layers and is not recommended where significant paver settlement or seasonal frost heave is expected. Proper installation requires dry conditions for the initial application, making it unsuitable for wet seasons or shaded areas that retain moisture.
