poppet valve

A valve (as in an internal combustion engine) which consists of a sliding shaft with a disk on the end (the disk being shaped to alternately plug and unplug a matching port). Such a valve is opened by either a cam or a solenoid and is closed by either a spring or a solenoid.

A poppet valve is a simple but essential component in engine cylinder heads, consisting of a stem with a flat or slightly curved disk (the head) that seats against a conical port opening. When closed, the disk seals the port against gas leakage; when open, it allows air, fuel, or exhaust to flow through. The valve either pops up under actuation or reseats under spring force, hence the name.

In a four-stroke engine, poppet valves control the flow of intake charge into the cylinder and exhaust gases out of it. Intake valves are typically larger than exhaust valves because intake gas flows more slowly; exhaust gas exits under higher pressure and velocity. The valve head diameter commonly ranges from 30 to 50 millimeters in automotive engines, with the seating angle machined at 30 to 45 degrees. Stem diameter is usually 5 to 8 millimeters. The valve must withstand extreme thermal cycling, temperature swings of 400 to 900 degrees Celsius between idle and full load.

Actuation and Failures

A cam on the crankshaft or camshaft mechanically lifts the poppet valve open; a spring (usually a coil spring, sometimes a wavy spring) returns it to closure. Modern designs may use hydraulic or electro-magnetic actuation for variable timing. The most common failure mode is valve seat recession, where the head gradually wears into the seat rather than sealing cleanly, allowing compression leakage and combustion gas blow-by during operation. Carbon buildup on the seating surface also prevents tight closure, reducing efficiency and allowing backflash into the intake manifold.

Materials matter enormously. Intake valves are often made from chrome-molybdenum steel or nickel-chromium alloys; exhaust valves require nickel-chromium-cobalt or even superalloys containing tungsten for heat resistance. The seat is typically cut directly into the cast iron or aluminum alloy head, though removable steel seat inserts are used in aluminum heads to reduce erosion and allow easier rework.

Poppet valves compete with sleeve valves (cylindrical sleeves sliding in the cylinder wall) and rotary valves, but poppet designs dominate because they are compact, cheap to manufacture, and sealed readily with a simple spring. They remain the standard in virtually all gasoline and diesel engines, from small lawn mowers to heavy industrial power plants.
