The left-hand side of a vessel, including aircraft, when one is facing the front. Used to unambiguously refer to directions relative to the vessel structure, rather than to a person or object on board.

Port is the left side of a ship, aircraft, or any vessel when you stand facing forward toward the bow or nose. It is an absolute directional term tied to the vessel's structure, not to an observer's position or the compass. A crew member standing anywhere on deck can say "port" and every other crew member knows exactly which side is meant, regardless of which way they themselves are facing. This removes ambiguity that would arise from using left and right, which shift with your orientation.
The term originated in sailing ship practice. Early vessels were steered by a paddle or oar hung over the right side of the stern; this steering side was called the "starboard" side (likely from Old English "steer" and "board"). To load and unload cargo, ships docked on the opposite side, called the "port" side, which was thus safer for approach and berthing. The names stuck. Today port and starboard are universal in maritime and aviation, carved into vessel and aircraft structure itself through nomenclature, marking, and watertight compartment labeling.
Port carries operational weight in ship design and seamanship. Hull plating, piping, electrical runs, and ballast tanks are identified by port or starboard designation. Cargo hold hatches, mooring bitts, and davits are located port or starboard. A pilot boarding a vessel for the first time can navigate without confusion. Port and starboard also appear in stability calculations, trim sheets, and damage control procedures, where precision is critical. Tilting a compass card or rotating a diagram does not change port; it is fixed to the hull.
Port is also used as a verb in maritime command: "port the helm" or "port your rudder" instructs the helmsman to move the rudder so the vessel turns to port. This usage is less common in modern vessels with power steering and standardized controls, but remains in nautical tradition and naval protocols. Modern aircraft use the same convention: port engines, port landing gear, port navigation light.
Confusion with the other meaning of port, the harbor or berthing facility, has never caused practical difficulty because context makes the distinction immediate. A worker might say "take it down to the port" (the facility) or "swing it over the port" (the side), and the meaning is clear from syntax. However, the distinction has made shipyard jargon and maritime documentation dense with qualifying language: "port-side manifold," "port-quarter" rather than mere "port." Precision saves lives in vessels where a single order misunderstood can cause collision or capsize.
