A porthole is a circular opening in a ship's hull fitted with a strong window frame and glass pane, designed to admit light and air to interior spaces while maintaining the watertight integrity of the hull. The frame, called a portlight frame or porthole ring, is typically made of cast bronze, aluminum alloy, or stainless steel and bolts through the hull plating from both sides, with a rubber or neoprene gasket creating a watertight seal. The window itself is usually tempered glass or acrylic, typically 6 to 12 inches in diameter depending on vessel class and location.

Portholes differ fundamentally from ordinary windows because they must withstand hydrostatic pressure, corrosion from saltwater immersion, thermal cycling, and the structural flexing of the hull itself. The circular design distributes stress evenly around the opening, making it inherently stronger than a rectangular cut of the same area. Modern portlights often include internal hinged covers or external dogging mechanisms that allow crew to seal them in heavy weather or when the vessel is at risk of being swamped.

Portholes are mounted in the sides of accommodation spaces, engine rooms, and cargo holds where natural light is desirable but where the opening cannot be located so low that it risks submersion in rough seas. Ships typically position them well above the summer load line, often in the superstructure or deckhouse rather than the main hull. Fishing vessels, ferries, and smaller commercial ships use them more liberally than large container ships, where continuous weather exposure makes them less practical.

The term 'porthole' itself derives from the French porte (door) and hole, distinguishing it from scuttles, which are smaller ventilation openings, and from ports, which refers to harbor facilities. In maritime practice, the terms porthole and portlight are now used interchangeably, though portlight is becoming more common in technical specifications. A porthole that leaks or fails to seal properly poses serious risks: water ingress can flood compartments, corrode equipment, and in severe cases compromise stability or lead to progressive flooding.

Bronze was the traditional material because it resists corrosion and is easy to machine, but the shift toward aluminum alloys in modern shipbuilding has reduced weight and maintenance costs. Vessels operating in polar regions or high-corrosion environments sometimes use duplex stainless steel frames. Acrylic panes, preferred over tempered glass on working vessels because they are less prone to cracking under impact, must be replaced periodically as they become clouded by UV exposure and salt spray.
