A power lead is a flexible cable assembly that carries electrical current from a wall socket or distribution panel to an appliance, machine, or portable tool. One end terminates in a plug (male connector) that enters the mains outlet; the other end connects directly to the device's power inlet or terminal block. The lead itself consists of two or more insulated conductors twisted or bundled together, typically sheathed in PVC or rubber. Power leads range from thin, lightweight cords for small tools (1.5 mm² copper cross-section) to heavy-duty cables for industrial machinery (6 mm² or larger).
The construction of a power lead varies by voltage and current rating. Standard domestic power leads in the UK use 3-core cable: live (brown), neutral (blue), and earth (green/yellow stripe). The plug type, cable length, and conductor gauge must match both the appliance's power demand and local electrical standards. A 2.5 kW portable heater might use a 1.5 mm² lead with a 13 A plug; a 7.5 kW workshop compressor requires 2.5 mm² cable and 32 A industrial connector. Undersized leads cause voltage drop and overheating; oversized leads waste material and increase stiffness.
Damage and degradation are common failure modes. Repeated flexing, exposure to heat, moisture, or chemical solvents deteriorates the outer sheath, exposing live conductors and creating shock or fire hazard. Cuts, kinks, and crushing flatten the conductors, increasing resistance and generating heat. The plug or connector socket can loosen over time, causing arcing at the contact point. Coiled or bundled leads trap heat and accelerate insulation breakdown. Many industrial accidents stem from damaged power leads that go unnoticed because the equipment still functions.
Terminology and standards
The term power lead is predominantly British; North American usage favours power cord or power cable. The name reflects the cable's role as the physical connection that 'leads' electricity from source to load. In professional settings, electricians distinguish between flexible power leads (used for portable equipment) and fixed wiring (installed in walls and conduits). Power leads are classified by voltage (230 V single-phase, 400 V three-phase), current rating (5 A to 63 A), and duty cycle (light domestic, heavy industrial). They must comply with BS 1363 (UK plug and socket), IEC 60227 (cable insulation), or equivalent local standards depending on the country of use.
Regular inspection of power leads is a legal and practical necessity in commercial and industrial environments. Visible cracks, burns, bare wire, loose plugs, or unusual heat during operation warrant immediate replacement. Most workplace safety regulations mandate replacement intervals (typically every 3 to 5 years for heavy-use leads) and prohibit temporary repairs such as tape or sleeving over damage. Coiling leads loosely, storing them away from heat and moisture, and keeping them clear of foot traffic extends service life. For critical machinery, using a residual current device (RCD) or portable appliance tester reduces the risk of electrocution or fire caused by lead failure.
