In electrical engineering, a precursor is a transient event or disturbance that occurs immediately before a larger fault or failure. It is typically a brief voltage spike, current surge, or oscillation that appears on the power system seconds to hours before a sustained fault develops. The precursor itself may be small enough to pass unnoticed by standard monitoring, but modern protective relays and fault recorders can detect and log it.
Precursors most commonly appear before insulation failures in cables and transformers. A partial discharge event, for example, creates electromagnetic noise that registers as a precursor. The discharge weakens the insulation locally, and over time mechanical stress, thermal cycling, or moisture ingress expands the damage until a full short circuit occurs. Similarly, loose connections generate precursor arcing before they fail catastrophically.
Detection and protection
Utilities and industrial plants value precursor detection because it allows condition-based maintenance. Partial discharge detection equipment, ultrasonic monitors, and high-frequency transient recorders can capture precursor signatures before insulation collapses. This early warning is cheaper than an unplanned outage and safer than running equipment to failure.
The term precursor emphasizes sequence and causation: it is not merely a preceding event, but one that directly causes the fault that follows. In this sense it differs from indicator or symptom, which may correlate with failure but not initiate it. In fault diagnosis, identifying precursors helps engineers trace the root cause rather than just treating the symptom.
