Printing paper is a cellulose sheet manufactured to accept and hold ink during offset, letterpress, digital, or other printing processes. Unlike newsprint, which uses mechanical pulp and degrades quickly, printing paper is typically made from chemical pulp and sized with starch or synthetic chemicals to control absorbency. The paper must bridge two competing demands: absorb ink fast enough to prevent set-off (transfer to the back of the sheet above it), but not so fast that the image softens or spreads.
The main categories divide by finish and weight. Uncoated stocks range from bond (25 to 32 lb) for business forms to text weight (70 to 100 lb) for brochures and book interiors; coated sheets add a mineral pigment layer (kaolin clay, calcium carbonate) bound with starch or latex, giving glossy, matte, or satin finishes. Coated grades hold fine halftone dots with minimal dot gain and produce sharper images, but cost more and require calibrated ink film thickness. Brightness (measured as ISO or TAPPI percentage), smoothness (measured in microinches), and opacity all affect how the finished print appears.
Common problems stem from moisture content and surface properties. Paper that absorbs moisture from humid air becomes limp and jams in the press; paper dried too much becomes brittle and tears at fold or perforation lines. Sizing that is too weak allows ink to feather into the sheet, blurring type; oversized paper resists ink and causes poor transfer. Some offset presses require a narrower range: typically 4.5 to 5.5 percent moisture at the mill and 45 to 55 percent relative humidity in the pressroom.
The term printing paper is deliberate and functional. It excludes newsprint (lower fiber quality, high ink absorption, short shelf life) and specialty papers like kraft (high tensile strength for bags) or label stock (often synthetic or heavily coated). In trade, you may hear weight quoted in pounds per ream (500 sheets at the basis size, usually 25 by 38 inches) or in grams per square meter (gsm), which is the international standard. A 20 lb bond equals roughly 75 gsm; an 80 lb text is about 118 gsm.
Printing paper sits at the center of a supply chain: mills blend hardwood and softwood fiber, add chemicals, press and dry the sheet, and ship in reams or skids. Printers choose grades based on the job, press type, and budget. Digital printing favors lighter, smoother uncoated stocks. Offset lithography can use both coated and uncoated, but requires tighter dimensional tolerance and moisture control. Direct mail and packaging often demands brightness and opacity to stand out; book publishing trades cost for texture and readability. The choice of paper grade affects not only image quality but also press speed, ink consumption, and bindery performance.
