A ran is a coil of yarn or rope wound onto a spool or drum by a spun-yarn winch, a motorized device used in sailmaking and rope work. The yarn sits ready for feeding into stitching machines, braiding frames, or hand-work stations. The term comes from rope-making trades where ran refers to the prepared length of material, distinguishing it from bulk stock or loose fiber.

In a sailmaking loft, a ran typically holds between 500 and 2000 meters of continuous yarn, depending on the fiber type and desired coil diameter. Common materials include polyester thread for heavy weather sails, Kevlar blends for high-performance racing sails, and cotton or linen in traditional work. The winch maintains even tension as it winds, preventing the yarn from slipping or kinking, which would create weak spots in finished seams.

The ran sits on a creel or stand positioned to feed smoothly into a machine. Stitching operators pull yarn from the coil at a controlled rate; if the yarn binds or the coil unwinds unevenly, stitches become uneven and seams weaken. A poorly wound ran with loose sections or crossing wraps can jam sewing equipment or break mid-seam, forcing rework.

Proper ran management requires checking the winch tension regularly and monitoring yarn for abrasion or contamination. Dust and fibers that accumulate on the coil surface are removed before use to avoid dragging debris into stitching equipment. Ran storage in dry conditions prevents moisture absorption, which can swell synthetic fibers and cause binding.

The ran is specific to industrial rope and sail production. Smaller hand-sewn work may use yarn from cards or bobbins instead. Modern sailmakers also use automated braiding and stitching systems that feed directly from large spools, but traditional lofts and repair shops still rely on the ran system for flexibility and quality control.
