A readerboard is a fixed or portable electronic display, typically using LED technology, that shows live operational metrics in industrial and commercial settings. In a call center, it might display current call volumes, average handle time, or queue depth; in a manufacturing plant, it shows production counts, downtime alerts, or safety statistics. The display updates in real time or near-real time, making current conditions visible to everyone in the space without requiring them to check individual monitors or terminals.

The hardware usually consists of a rectangular LED panel matrix, ranging from small 16x2 character displays to large format screens showing graphs or color-coded status indicators. Unlike a traditional monitor, a readerboard is designed for viewing from distance and angle, often mounted on walls or suspended from ceilings. The LEDs are bright enough to be readable in ambient light without becoming a glare hazard. Character-based boards (typically showing rows of text) remain common in industrial settings because they are robust, easy to update via simple network protocols, and require less bandwidth than video displays.

Common uses and signal architecture

Readerboards pull data from backend systems, control software, or PLC networks and render it on the display in near-real time. In contact centers, they aggregate ACD (automatic call distribution) metrics; in manufacturing, they consume data from MES (manufacturing execution systems) or SCADA networks. The display is often controlled via Ethernet, serial connection, or wireless link, allowing updates without visiting the hardware itself. Some boards support custom formatting, color coding, and alarm modes to highlight threshold breaches or critical events.

A key reliability concern is network dependency: if the data feed drops, the display freezes on its last state, which can mislead operators. Better installations include local buffering or fallback logic so the board continues to show useful data even if the upstream connection fails. LED modules themselves have long service life (typically 50,000 hours or more), but the control electronics and power supplies are the failure points to watch. Environmental exposure, temperature swings, and vibration in factory settings require proper enclosure and mounting.

The term readerboard is used loosely across industries to mean any large-format operational display intended for group viewing, but it originated in environments where simple alphanumeric LED panels were the practical choice. Modern equivalents may use LCD or LED video walls, but the functional role and name persist. In some trades, the term overlaps with status board, scoreboard, or andon board (from the Japanese lean manufacturing tradition), though andon boards originally signaled problems by light and sound rather than displaying numeric data.
