A relay room is an enclosed space within a railway signalling installation that houses the electromagnetic relays, switchgear, and associated equipment needed to control signals, points (switches), and other trackside apparatus. Before solid-state electronics, the relay room was the operational heart of any large railway junction or station, containing hundreds or thousands of individual relays wired together in complex logic circuits that governed train movements across the entire layout.

The relays themselves are electromechanical devices: a coil energised by low-voltage current pulls an armature that opens or closes multiple contacts. These contacts then switch heavier currents to the actual signal lamps, point motors, and line circuits. A typical relay room at a busy junction might contain relays mounted on vertical frames called relay sets, organized by function (signal relays, point relays, track relays) and arranged so that technicians could trace circuits and identify failures by visual inspection and physical testing.

The physical layout of a relay room reflects its logic: relays are grouped into circuits and sub-circuits, with standardized wiring practices that allow maintenance staff to understand the system without reference to diagrams. Test jacks and plugs permit technicians to insert measuring instruments or bypass equipment for testing and fault-finding. Cables enter through terminal blocks, and the room must be kept clean and dry to prevent corrosion and false contacts; dust, moisture, and vibration are the enemies of relay logic.

Many relay rooms remain in use on heritage railways and some main lines, though modern signalling is increasingly computerized. The relay room is now largely superseded by signal boxes with electronic processors and programmable logic controllers, which perform identical functions but occupy a fraction of the space and require far less maintenance. Nevertheless, understanding relay logic remains valuable for railway personnel maintaining older infrastructure or working on transition projects.
