A reset button is a push control that clears a device or system back to its original operating state, erasing any stored settings, fault codes, or operating parameters that have accumulated during run time. In industrial electronics, it is fundamental to troubleshooting and maintenance: when a control system enters an error state, holds false sensor data, or simply needs to restart its logic sequence, the reset button forces a hard return to factory defaults or a known-good baseline.

Physical reset buttons vary widely by application. In compact controllers and PLCs, a recessed momentary pushbutton (often requiring a tool to activate) prevents accidental triggering on a busy factory floor. Larger industrial panels may use a key-operated reset switch or a guarded push-pull handle. Soft resets, achieved through a touchscreen interface or networked command, perform the same function without physical contact. Mechanical resets, using a lever or solenoid, are less common but appear in legacy equipment where electrical failure must not prevent a manual restart.

Critically, a reset clears only what the designer intended it to clear. A full system reset on a programmable controller will wipe runtime data, active alarm logs, and production counters; a partial reset may restore only communication links while preserving production history. Some equipment requires a deliberate sequence: hold the button for two seconds for a soft reset, five seconds for a hard reset. This prevents hair-trigger restarts that would halt production unnecessarily.

The button's location and visibility are deliberate. On motor starters, it sits beside the stop button for quick access when a motor locks or overheats. On AC drives, it may be hidden behind a cover door to prevent casual resets that would interrupt a running process. Networked industrial systems often provide reset capability through a supervisory interface rather than a physical button, logging who initiated the reset and when.

Reset is not a cure-all. A button that resets a drive does nothing for a seized mechanical load or a burned-out bearing. If a system requires constant resetting to function, the root cause, sensor drift, software corruption, undersizing, or electrical noise, must be diagnosed and fixed. Over-reliance on the reset button is a sign that the equipment is masking rather than solving a fault.
