A return tag is a physical tag or label affixed to a railway car by the receiving facility to document that the car has arrived at its intended destination. The shipper, carrier, or consignee attaches this tag as a simple but definitive record, which is then removed and returned to the shipping party or retained by the carrier to confirm delivery. In freight operations where paper documentation can be slow or disputed, the return tag serves as immediate, tangible evidence of actual receipt.

Return tags take several forms depending on the operation's needs. Most commonly they are numbered metal or heavy cardstock labels with adhesive backing or wire attachment points, stamped or printed with date and destination information. Some operations use tags with tear-off stubs that remain on the car while a matching portion returns to the dispatcher. In intermodal and container services, tags may include bar codes or QR codes to allow electronic scanning alongside the physical tag.

The tag must be secured where it will not blow away or be covered during loading and transit. Common attachment points are the side door latch, a chain loop on the car undercarriage, or a dedicated tag bracket welded to the car body. Tags typically remain visible and accessible until the car is unloaded, at which point the receiving dock removes the tag and returns it by mail, messenger, or electronic scan to the originating freight agent.

Return tags prevent disputes over whether a car actually reached its destination within a specified time window, particularly important for demurrage and detention billing. When a shipper claims non-delivery and a carrier disputes liability, the signed or dated return tag becomes the proof of performance. This is especially critical in industries like automotive parts supply or just-in-time manufacturing where late arrivals trigger penalty clauses.

The term reflects railway's older documentation culture, when physical evidence mattered more than electronic tracking. Modern fleet management systems, GPS locators, and electronic manifest systems have reduced reliance on return tags in some operations, but they persist in smaller yards, private industrial sidings, and international rail routes where connectivity or coordination between carriers is spotty. The return tag remains a low-cost, non-dependent backup method for confirming delivery when electronic systems fail or are not integrated across multiple operators.
