In metallurgy, to reverberate means to heat metal by reflecting flames from the roof of a furnace down onto the workpiece, rather than exposing it to direct flame contact. The principle relies on a curved or arched furnace interior, typically lined with refractory brick, that catches hot gases rising from the firebox and directs them back downward across the charge.

The reverberatory furnace, the defining equipment for this process, became standard from the 18th century onward for melting copper, tin, and lead ores, and later for refining these metals. The design kept the ore or metal separate from direct flame and fuel ash, which mattered greatly: direct contact would introduce impurities and cause uneven heating. The furnace typically had a fire grate at one end, a long heated chamber in the middle where metal sat on a hearth, and a chimney flue at the far end drawing gases through the system.

Why reverberatory, and why obsolete

The name comes from the Latin reverberate, meaning to strike back or beat back. The flames literally bounce off the reverberant surface. By the mid-20th century, however, induction furnaces, electric arc furnaces, and blast furnaces with better temperature control had displaced reverberatory furnaces in most industrial settings. The term itself faded into historical use, though the principle of indirect radiant heating persisted in other furnace designs.

In its heyday, reverberatory furnaces required skilled operators to manage fuel feed rate, control draft through the flue, and judge when charge had reached correct temperature by color and behavior. The shallow hearth design meant long residence times, sometimes many hours for large batches. Scaling and oxidation on the metal surface were persistent problems despite the indirect heating method.

Today the term appears mainly in metallurgical history, patent records, and descriptions of heritage metalworking. Understanding it remains useful for reading older technical literature and for heritage crafts like brass founding, where small reverberatory furnaces are still occasionally built and operated.
