A right-hander is a corner or section of a racetrack, road course, or test circuit where the vehicle's trajectory curves to the right. In automotive testing and motorsport, it is simply the counterpart to a left-hander, and both terms are used to describe the geometric layout of a circuit without reference to direction of travel. The term is directional shorthand that allows engineers, drivers, and technicians to communicate quickly about specific sections during development work, telemetry review, or track preparation.
Right-handers vary enormously in radius and banking. A hairpin right-hander might have a radius of 15 to 25 metres and demand near-zero speed; a fast sweeper on a high-speed circuit might have a radius of 200 metres or more and be taken at near full throttle. Banking also changes behaviour: a banked right-hander reduces load on the outer wheels, while a flat or off-camber right-hander increases it. Drivers and suspension engineers will tune toe, anti-roll stiffness, and brake balance differently depending on whether a right-hander is tight, medium, or fast.
Track behaviour and setup
The side of the vehicle that experiences the highest load in a right-hander is the left side, where weight transfers during cornering. This means tyres, springs, and dampers on the left are working harder, and brake balance, differential settings, and front-to-rear weight distribution all become critical. A car set up for a circuit with many fast right-handers may feel unbalanced on a track dominated by left-handers, because the mechanical setup is asymmetrical by nature.
Telemetry systems log steering angle, lateral acceleration, throttle position, and brake pressure through each right-hander to build a profile of vehicle behaviour. Drivers often report that a single troublesome right-hander can reveal underlying issues: understeer at entry, oversteer at mid-corner, or loss of traction on exit. Circuit designers sometimes mirror or balance the number of left-handers and right-handers to avoid giving one side of the car an unfair advantage over a full race distance.
The term appears in track maps, driver briefing notes, and engineering reports as neutral, factual language. A driver might say "the right-hander after the chicane is where we're losing time," or an engineer might note "we need more left-side compliance through the medium-speed right-handers." It is rarely used outside motorsport and automotive development; road engineers and traffic planners tend to use angle measurements or cardinal directions instead.
