ring off

To ring off is to disconnect a telephone call by replacing the handset on its cradle or pressing the disconnect button. In older switchboard systems, it meant physically breaking the circuit by operating a key or lever. The term survives from the era when telephone operators manually connected calls; when a subscriber finished talking, they would signal readiness to disconnect, and the operator would "ring off" by opening the line.

In electrical terms, ringing off terminates the circuit path between two telephone instruments. Before electronic switching, this required mechanical action: the operator would turn a key or pull a plug from a jack panel, interrupting the metallic loop formed by the calling and called parties' lines. The disconnect had to be clean and instantaneous to prevent cross-talk or phantom signals on adjacent pairs in a cable bundle.

The distinction between ringing off and simply setting down a handset matters in technical contexts. An ordinary hang-up might leave the line in an off-hook state, still drawing current and occupying a circuit. A proper ring-off severed the connection entirely, freeing the line for reuse. In rotary and early tone-dialing systems, the exchange equipment had to detect ring-off to reset its selector mechanisms and prepare for the next incoming call.

Modern VoIP and digital systems use the term less frequently, but the underlying electrical action remains: transmission ceases, the codec releases its timeslot, and the session terminates. On older PBX and key telephone systems, ringing off triggered relay logic that logged the call duration, updated billing information, and blocked further use of that channel until the next seizure.

Confusion sometimes arises between ring-off and ring-down. A ring-down line is a dedicated circuit with no dial mechanism; it connects directly when picked up. Ringing off such a line required only the hang-up action, whereas ringing off a normal switched line required additional steps: waiting for the dial tone, dialing the disconnect code, or allowing the exchange to time out the idle channel.
