A sailor collar is a broad, flat neckline treatment featuring a characteristic square or rectangular flap across the back shoulders that tapers down to a deep V-notch at the front. The back panel typically measures 4 to 6 inches in depth, while the front edges slope inward at roughly 45 degrees to form the V opening. The collar sits flat against the garment without rolling or standing, requiring a stabilized construction to maintain its shape through wear and washing.

Construction of a sailor collar involves cutting the collar as a single piece or assembled from multiple sections, then interfacing it with firm materials such as cotton sateen, linen, or modern synthetics. The undercollar receives a layer of woven interfacing, typically 20 to 25 GSM (grams per square meter), to prevent drooping. The outer collar fabric is sewn to this interfaced layer, then top-stitched around the perimeter, usually 0.25 to 0.375 inches from the edge. The V-notch is carefully cut and bound or faced to prevent fraying and provide a clean interior finish.

Variants and Production Challenges

Sailor collars appear in several common forms: the traditional white cotton version on children's wear and naval-inspired garments, striped versions combining contrast fabrics on the front and back panels, and buttoned or snap-closure versions where the front points overlap. Production defects include uneven V-notches, puckering along the seamlines due to inadequate stabilization, and loss of shape after laundering when interfacing has not been properly secured. Plaid or striped fabrics present particular alignment challenges at the V-junction and along the perimeter seams.

The sailor collar gained its name and widespread use in late 19th-century children's fashion, derived from the uniform necklines worn on naval vessels. Its prominent back panel provided visual clarity and symbolic association with maritime tradition. Today it remains common in children's garments, uniform shirts, and vintage-inspired women's wear. In production, it requires more fabric waste and precision cutting than notched or standing collars, making it less economical for high-volume basic wear. Quality control requires visual inspection of symmetry and seam integrity, as defects in the V-notch or asymmetrical back panels are immediately visible to the wearer.
