A screw box is a fixed die assembly used to cut external threads onto wooden dowels and blanks, turning smooth rod stock into finished wooden screws. The tool consists of a hardened steel body containing multiple cutting blades arranged radially around a central axis. Unlike metal screw dies that rely on a separate handle or tap wrench, a screw box incorporates its own frame and spindle, making it a complete threading device that clamps into a bench vise.

The workpiece, typically a sharpened wooden dowel of the correct diameter, is inserted into the central opening and rotated by hand or by applying downward pressure while twisting. As the blank advances through the dies, the cutting edges gradually form a helical thread to a depth of roughly 0.25 to 0.375 inches, depending on the screw size and design. Common thread pitches range from 8 to 20 threads per inch for domestic wooden screw production. The tool produces a tapered thread similar to modern wood screw geometry, allowing the screw to bite into timber without pre-drilling.

Variants and practical operation

Screw boxes were manufactured in a range of sizes, with typical models cutting screws from number 6 to number 16 gauge. Each size box is dedicated to one screw size; a craftsman or small manufacturer would maintain a set of several boxes to produce different thread diameters. The interior design varies between makers, with some featuring two-stage cutting zones to reduce binding and breakage. Box construction must be robust, as the tool experiences lateral stress from the turning action and wood fiber resistance; cast iron or ductile iron bodies are standard.

The main failure mode is jamming or binding when a dowel of slightly oversized diameter is forced through the dies, often resulting in the wooden blank shattering rather than the tool breaking. Threading speed is limited by wood type and dryness: softwoods cut cleanly and quickly, while hard woods or overly dry stock create friction and chatter. A sharp wooden point or pilot wound from wire is essential at the leading end of the blank to guide entry and reduce initial drag.

Screw boxes were extensively used from the 18th century through the early 20th century for hand production of wooden screws, particularly in furniture making, coachwork, and general carpentry. The device became less common after industrial screw rolling and stamping machinery displaced manual methods, but remains valued by woodworking restoration specialists and hand tool enthusiasts who produce authentic period hardware.
