A scrivet is a single-piece fastener that combines a screw shaft with a permanently attached nut, typically molded from nylon or acetal copolymer. The nut half remains captive inside the fastener body, so when you thread the screw end into a threaded insert or hole from one side of a panel, the nut grips from within without requiring access to the opposite side. This makes it essential for automotive assembly where panels, fascias, splash shields, and trim pieces must be secured from their visible face only.
The scrivet works through mechanical friction and slight deformation as the screw threads engage the nut. The nut is typically molded slightly smaller than its final shape, so the screw gradually expands it to full size as you turn the fastener. This creates a progressively tightening grip. Most automotive scrivets use M4 or M5 screw diameters and require a Phillips or square-drive screwdriver. Once fully engaged, they resist vibration and prevent fastener rotation better than simple snap-fit clips, though they cannot be re-used after removal because the nut deforms permanently.
Variants exist based on panel thickness and material. Deep-cavity scrivets accommodate thicker plastic or composite panels. Some designs feature a dome-shaped cap that covers the screw head for aesthetic purposes once installed. Others use a flanged shoulder that serves as a built-in washer to distribute load over soft materials like bumper covers without crushing them. The screw tip geometry varies too: some are self-tapping to bite directly into untapped plastic, while others are designed for pre-drilled and threaded inserts.
Failure modes and installation issues
Scrivets fail most often from over-torquing, which strips the nut or shears the screw shaft cleanly. Under-tightening leaves the fastener loose and allows panel rattle. Insufficient nut deformation during assembly can also result if the screw does not thread deeply enough into the nut cavity. Cold plastic, especially in winter assembly environments, may not deform adequately, so some plants pre-warm the fasteners or panels. Stripped threads in the mounting hole or insert render the joint useless, as the nut cannot grip freely spinning metal.
The term 'scrivet' blends 'screw' and 'rivet,' reflecting its hybrid nature: like a rivet, it creates a permanent, non-removable joint from one side; like a screw, it uses threaded engagement. This makes it a preferred fastener in high-volume automotive body assembly lines where one-sided access is standard. It eliminates the need for a technician to hold a nut on the far side of a panel, reducing labor time and the risk of dropped fasteners inside panel cavities.
