In offset lithography, scumming is the gradual accumulation of ink on non-image areas of the printing plate, typically in the margin or around the edges of the printed image. Because lithographic plates rely on the chemical opposition between water-receptive and ink-receptive zones, any breakdown of this separation causes ink to stick where only water should be present. The result is smudged, dirty prints with reduced contrast and compromised color fidelity.
Scumming occurs most often when the fountain solution (the water-based dampening fluid) loses its chemical balance or becomes contaminated. If the pH drifts too high, or if the solution picks up dissolved ink pigments, lint, or paper fibers, the non-image areas lose their water affinity and begin accepting ink. Temperature matters too: cold fountain solution works poorly, while excessively warm solution can break down the gum arabic layer that protects the bare plate.
Mechanical and press-side causes
Poor roller contact or uneven ink distribution across the form roller will concentrate ink in certain zones, overwhelming local dampening capacity. Worn or glazed dampening rollers that don't release fresh solution evenly are a common culprit. Likewise, a blanket that is too soft, too hard, or improperly seated can transfer ink unevenly, creating wet spots where the plate cannot reject the ink. Operator error such as running the press too fast without sufficient ink-to-water balance, or failing to clean the rollers between jobs, accelerates scumming.
Paper fibers and coating dust shed during printing can also degrade the plate surface by blocking the gum layer, especially after thousands of impressions. Plates that have been stored poorly, exposed to heat, or subject to fingerprints before mounting are already compromised and scum more readily. Once scumming starts, it usually accelerates because the accumulated ink changes the local surface chemistry, making the problem self-reinforcing.
The name reflects the industrial meaning of scum: a layer of undesirable matter floating on or clinging to a surface. Early printers recognized this as a persistent problem requiring constant vigilance, and the term has remained in use across letterpress, offset, and flexography. Preventing scumming requires disciplined maintenance of fountain solution chemistry, regular roller cleaning, proper blanket tensioning, and monitoring print quality for early warning signs such as slight graying in margins or inconsistent ink transfer.
