A seat belt is a webbing strap assembly anchored to the vehicle frame that wraps across an occupant's lap and chest, then locks in place via an inertia reel mechanism or manual buckle. Its function is to distribute deceleration forces over a wide area of the body during collision, preventing the occupant from striking the dashboard, windscreen, or other hard surfaces at the vehicle's stopping speed.
Modern seat belts consist of several components working together: a spool mechanism that allows free movement during normal driving but locks when sudden deceleration is detected; webbing typically made from polyester or nylon rated for specific tensile strength; a buckle assembly with a push-button release; and anchor points welded or bolted to the vehicle's B-pillar, floor pan, and roof rail. The three-point configuration, running diagonally across the shoulder and horizontally across the hips, became standard because it distributes loads to the skeletal structures best able to withstand them.
Variants include lap belts alone (found on rear seats in some older vehicles), which are now considered inadequate; shoulder belts with separate lap belts; and integrated designs that mount directly to the seat structure rather than the vehicle frame. Pre-tensioners, which tighten the belt by a few centimeters in the milliseconds after impact detection, are now common on driver and front passenger positions, reducing slack and improving load distribution.
Common failure modes and maintenance
Seat belt failure typically results from webbing degradation due to UV exposure, chemical contamination, or abrasion; buckle mechanisms jamming from corrosion or debris; or anchor point fatigue cracks. A frayed or stiff belt should be replaced, not repaired, as the structural properties cannot be reliably restored. Most jurisdictions require seat belt use by law, and some vehicles trigger warning lights or audible alarms if occupants fail to buckle in.
The name derives simply from the belt's position on the seat and its restraining function. Seat belts have been legally required on new vehicles in most developed countries since the 1970s, following epidemiological evidence that they reduce fatality risk by approximately 40 to 50 percent in frontal crashes when properly worn. They work most effectively when used in combination with airbags and crumple zones, all three components together managing the energy profile of a collision.
