seat-mile

A unit of measure of passenger carrying capacity, equal to the number of seats available multiplied by the number of miles flown.

seat-mile: capacity measurement that accounts for distance

A seat-mile is a fundamental unit for measuring the productive capacity of a passenger vehicle over a given distance. It is calculated by multiplying the number of available seats in the vehicle by the number of miles (or kilometres) it travels. For example, a 150-seat aircraft flying 500 miles generates 75,000 seat-miles of capacity; the same aircraft on a 1,000-mile route generates 150,000 seat-miles.

The metric is essential for comparing the output of different fleets and routes on a common basis. An airline operating a 180-seat regional jet on a 2-hour flight covers roughly 1,080 seat-miles (assuming a 600-mile distance), whereas the same aircraft on a cross-country 2,400-mile route covers 432,000 seat-miles. This allows operators and investors to assess capacity deployment independently of fleet size or route length.

Seat-miles must be distinguished from available seat-kilometres (ASK) in metric markets, which measures the same concept in kilometres. The calculation itself is straightforward, but interpretation requires care: a route may generate high seat-miles while carrying relatively few paying passengers, resulting in a low load factor (the percentage of seats actually filled). A 150-seat aircraft with 90 passengers on a 500-mile route generates 75,000 seat-miles but achieves only a 60 percent load factor.

Use in scheduling and asset planning

Transport operators use seat-miles to evaluate route profitability, fleet utilisation, and capital efficiency. Airlines and coach operators benchmark their fleets against competitors using this metric. It also underpins capacity planning: if demand on a route is forecast at 50,000 passengers annually and average trip length is 400 miles, the operator can calculate the total seat-miles required and select appropriate aircraft or vehicle types to cover that demand efficiently.

The metric has limits. It does not account for load factor, revenue per seat, fuel efficiency, or utilisation rates across different times of day. An older, fuel-inefficient aircraft might generate the same seat-miles as a modern competitor at significantly higher operating cost. Nevertheless, seat-mile capacity remains the foundational measure of transport supply across aviation, bus services, and rail operations.
