seated: when fabric loses shape from repeated sitting
A seated skirt is one that has permanently stretched and sagged across the seat and upper thigh area, losing its original fit and drape. This happens because the fabric fibers, especially in natural materials like cotton or wool blends, are repeatedly stressed and compressed under body weight during sitting. The elastic recovery of the material degrades over time, leaving a baggy, sometimes shiny patch that refuses to return to its original dimensions even after washing or wearing the garment fresh.
The problem is most visible in tighter-fitting skirts made from moderately stable fabrics. Heavier denims or structured wools resist seating better because their thicker weave and higher yarn tension can withstand compression. Conversely, lightweight linens, thin cotton blends, and stretchy materials prone to plastic deformation seat very quickly. Spandex-heavy fabrics sometimes recover partially after rest, but the damage is typically permanent once the fabric has relaxed completely.
Seated is directly related to fabric recovery, a property measured in percent after standard stress testing. A fabric with poor recovery, meaning it does not snap back to shape after being pulled or compressed, will seat within weeks of regular wear. Quality manufacturers test for this before cutting fabric, and garment designers account for it by using structured interfacing in the seat area or cutting skirts with a slight excess in that region to allow for inevitable relaxation.
In manufacturing and quality control, seating is tracked as a defect on returned garments. The term appears in wear-testing standards where sample skirts are subjected to repeated sitting and stretching cycles to predict how quickly a style will show this problem in the field. Mills selling to garment makers will quote recovery percentages, and a fabric with recovery below 75 percent after compression is often rejected for tailored skirts, though it may be acceptable for casual or workwear products where fit tolerance is higher.
