sextodecimo: a 16-leaf folding that became a standard pocket size

Sextodecimo, often abbreviated as 16mo, is a page format created by folding a full sheet of paper into sixteen leaves, or thirty-two pages when both sides are printed. The term comes from the Latin for "sixteenth", reflecting the mathematical division of the original sheet. In imperial measure, a sextodecimo page typically measures 3.25 by 5 inches, though metric equivalents exist for international production. This small, dense format historically defined pocket books, hymn books, and reference guides where portability mattered more than reading comfort.

The mechanics of sextodecimo folding involve precisely four successive right-angle folds of a single parent sheet. The press sheet itself must be much larger, typically around 20 by 25 inches in its parent size, so that after folding and trimming, the final pages meet their target dimensions. Bindery equipment performs these folds mechanically; the precision of the fold creases directly affects page alignment in the signature and the square-ness of the finished book block. Any slippage during folding becomes visible in the finished product as misaligned type or recto-verso drift.

Sextodecimo sits at the dense end of the traditional book format scale. Where foolscap folio (larger) was used for ledgers and legal documents, and octavo became the standard trade book size, sextodecimo maximized portability and paper economy. A single parent sheet could yield sixteen saleable page surfaces. This efficiency made small devotional works and pocket dictionaries affordable to produce and carry. The format almost disappeared after offset lithography and digital printing reduced the cost advantage of careful paper use, yet it persists in specialist editions, Penguin Classics bindings, and hand-bound work where the compact aesthetic is intentional.

Printers and binders encounter sextodecimo mainly when handling reprints of classic texts or when a client specifically requests the format. The chief production challenge is ensuring consistent fold angles and pressure; under-folding leaves ragged edges, while over-folding tears the paper. Modern binding lines handle 16mo signatures without difficulty, but small-press and hand-binding operations must monitor the fold manually. The format also creates practical binding demands: the many leaves per signature (sixteen pages per fold) mean the spine experiences more strain than in larger formats, so adequate adhesive and endpaper reinforcement become critical.
