A sinker is a finishing or framing nail, typically 1.5 to 3.5 inches long, with a small flat or slightly countersunk head and a ring- or spiral-textured shank or cement coating to resist withdrawal. Unlike a common framing nail with its larger, more prominent head, a sinker is designed to drive flush with the wood surface or slightly below it, leaving minimal visual mark on the finished face.
The defining feature is the coating, most commonly a resin or cement adhesive applied to the shank during manufacture. This adhesive creates friction and mechanical grip as the nail is driven, dramatically increasing holding power compared to a plain bright nail of the same gauge. The holding improvement is roughly 40 to 50 percent greater, making sinkers essential where fasteners must resist both withdrawal and shear stress without relying purely on friction fit.
In residential framing, sinkers are used to attach sheathing, subflooring, and rim board where a clean exterior surface matters. The small head also reduces splitting in softer woods like pine and fir, common in modern framing lumber. Larger sinkers, sometimes called pole barn nails, appear in agricultural and industrial applications where the coating allows fasteners to hold in green (wet) or pressure-treated lumber that would corrode bright nails rapidly.
Variants and selection
The main variable is length, rated by penny weight (8d, 10d, 16d, and so on), and material. Hot-dipped galvanized sinkers resist corrosion outdoors; stainless versions are rare and expensive. Some regional suppliers offer ring-shank sinkers instead of cement-coated, which provide mechanical grip through the rings rather than adhesive. The ring design is more durable in green wood because the adhesive doesn't fail as the wood shrinks and swells.Cost runs 15 to 30 percent higher than bright common nails of the same size, reflecting the coating process. Overdriving a sinker, particularly in hard woods, can shear the head or bend the shank before the coating has fully gripped. Once driven, they resist removal; trying to pry a sinker loose typically destroys surrounding wood rather than pulling the fastener free.
