The man who loads and operates the skip in a mine.

A skipman is the worker responsible for loading ore, waste rock, or personnel into a skip, then operating the hoist system that raises and lowers the skip up and down the mine shaft. The skip itself is an open or closed cage-like bucket, typically holding between 5 and 15 tons depending on shaft depth and rope capacity. The skipman's primary task is to ensure safe, efficient movement of material from the underground working levels to the surface.

In hard-rock and coal mines, the skipman works at the shaft collar, which is the entry point at the surface. At deeper mines, a second skipman or assistant called a banksman may work at the underground shaft station to load the skip at the pit bottom. The skipman communicates with the hoist operator via signal bells, telephone, or radio to indicate when the skip is loaded and ready for hoisting. Modern operations use bell codes or digital systems: three bells might mean "raise the skip," one bell might mean "lower it." Any miscommunication can result in collision, rope failure, or dropped load.

The role demands attention to load balance and weight limits. Overloading a skip stresses the rope and pulleys and risks shaft-side collision; underloading wastes time and money. Skipmen also inspect the skip for damage, wear on the suspension chains or hooks, and debris that could jam the hoisting mechanism. In older shafts, where wooden guides lined the shaft walls, a skipman had to ensure the skip ran true; in modern shafts with steel guidance, this risk is lower but not eliminated.

The term skipman (also skip operator in modern usage) comes directly from the skip itself. The word "skip" in mining derives from an Old Norse root meaning "basket" and was adopted in English mining vocabulary by the 18th century. A skipman was a skilled tradesperson, often earning above-average wages because the role carried serious safety responsibility and required judgment under pressure during emergency stops or cage jams.

Today, large mechanized mines have replaced many traditional skipman roles with automated hoist systems and load cells. However, skipmen still work in smaller underground mines, quarries, and deep shaft operations where personnel transport or irregular loads demand human judgment. Training for the role typically involves apprenticeship under an experienced skipman and certification by the mine operator, as the skipman's actions directly affect accident risk for all workers in the shaft.
