slagger: the worker who handles furnace waste

A slagger is a furnace operative responsible for removing slag, the molten or cooled residue that accumulates on top of metal during smelting and refining. In iron production, slag forms from gangue minerals in the ore and fluxing additives; in copper work, it results from impurities oxidized during roasting or converting. The slagger's job is to break, rake, or drain this material away at regular intervals, preventing it from suffocating the flame and degrading the final metal's quality.

The tools and methods vary by furnace type and process stage. In blast furnaces, slag flows continuously into beds where it cools; the slagger rakes and breaks the cooled material for removal. In reverberatory furnaces, the work is hotter and more immediate, with the slagger using long iron rakes or ladles to work at arm's length from the molten surface. Open-hearth steelmaking requires constant slag management: slagging off oxides during melt-down, breaking crusted slag mid-heat, and drawing final slag before the pour. Timing matters; slag left too long insulates the bath and slows heating, while careless raking can plunge cold slag into molten metal and cause violent spattering.

Physical demands are severe. The work is done in extreme radiant heat, often in foundries where summer ambient temperatures exceed forty degrees Celsius and furnace walls radiate far hotter. Slagging requires steady hands and judgment: misjudging the slag's fluidity or the rake angle can result in metal loss, chemical burns from splash, or foot injuries from falling chunks. Good slaggers develop intuition for metal temperature and slag condition by sight and sound alone, since instruments give slow feedback.

The role sits between furnace keeper and pourman in the hierarchy of an iron or steel shop floor. While semi-skilled or unskilled labour, the slagger's work directly affects yield and metal chemistry. Poor slag removal leads to oxide inclusions, segregation, and rejects; the best slaggers are valued enough to earn steady employment and to train successors. In modern integrated mills with mechanized slag handling and basic oxygen furnaces, the job has contracted, but slaggers remain essential in specialty foundries, small steelworks, and non-ferrous smelters where manual control is more economical than full automation.
