A slotter is a vertical milling machine designed to cut narrow rectangular grooves, called slots, into workpieces. Unlike a standard milling machine, which uses a rotating horizontal cutter, a slotter employs a vertical ram that reciprocates up and down, driving a cutting tool into the work on the downstroke and retracting on the return. The cutting tool is typically a single-point or multi-tooth cutter held in a slot or collet at the end of the ram. The workpiece sits on a table that can move horizontally and vertically to control the depth, width, and position of the slot.
Slotters were essential in traditional manufacturing for cutting keyways in shafts, gear teeth, spline grooves, and internal slots in castings or forgings where a rotating milling cutter could not reach. They remain in use in job shops and specialized work, though many slots are now cut on CNC machines or by broaching. Manual slotters typically feature a hand-operated feed wheel to advance the table, while production models may use power feed. The machine occupies less floor space than a large vertical milling machine and offers excellent precision for the vertical plunging motion required in slot cutting.
Variants and operation
Slotters come in two main configurations: the push-cut type, where the tool cuts on the downstroke, and the pull-cut type, where the tool cuts on the upstroke. The stroke length, ram speed, and table feed are adjustable to suit different materials and slot dimensions. Tool holders vary from simple clamp blocks for single-point tools to quick-change adapters for gang slotting operations. Vertical adjustment of the ram determines slot depth, while horizontal table movement controls slot length and positioning. The machine's inherent chatter and tool deflection limit the width and depth of slots practical in a single pass, so deep slots often require multiple passes or roughing and finishing cuts.
Common failures include tool breakage from excessive feed pressure, misalignment of the ram causing overheating and tool chatter, and table slippage from worn gibs or insufficient clamp pressure. Operators must secure the workpiece firmly and use sharp tools to avoid sudden tool binding, which can bend or snap the ram assembly. The reciprocating motion and unguarded moving parts demand respect for safety protocols.
The term slotter derives from the slot it produces. In industrial classification, the slotter sits between the shaper (which has a horizontal ram) and the broaching machine (which is single-pass and higher-speed). Modern CNC mills and EDM machines have largely replaced slotters in high-volume work, but they remain valued in tool rooms and for one-off jobs where the cost of setting up a broaching tool or programming a multi-axis mill is unjustified.
