A small valve opening into the atmosphere from the cylinder or condenser of a steam engine, to allow the escape of air when the piston makes a stroke.

A snifting valve is a small automatic or manually operated valve fitted to the cylinder or condenser of a steam engine that opens to atmosphere, allowing air trapped in the cylinder to escape as the piston strokes. During the intake or expansion phase, if air pockets remain in the cylinder space ahead of the piston, they create resistance and reduce power transfer. The snifting valve solves this by venting that air to atmosphere when pressure or mechanical action triggers it, clearing the path for steam.

The valve sits at the highest point of the cylinder or at the top of the condenser, where air naturally collects. In the simplest form, a snifting valve is a flapper or ball check that opens when the piston moves inward and creates a slight vacuum, then closes as steam pressure rises. More sophisticated designs use a small rod connected to the piston crosshead so the valve opens mechanically at a precise point in the stroke, independent of pressure fluctuations.

Function and necessity

Air in a steam cylinder reduces efficiency because it compresses instead of allowing steam to push the piston fully. A cylinder that cannot vent air will lose 5 to 15 percent of power output and may jerk or stall. Snifting valves were essential on older compound and triple-expansion engines where multiple cylinders exchanged steam at different pressures; trapped air in exhaust passages blocked fresh steam flow. On condensing engines, air in the condenser space prevents steam from entering and collapsing, raising back-pressure fatally.

The term snifting comes from the sharp audible hiss of air escaping; engineers could hear whether the valve was working by the sound alone. A malfunctioning or stuck snifting valve was immediately apparent as loss of power and a dull, sluggish stroke. Modern steam plants rarely use them because closed-loop condensing systems and modern materials eliminate most air ingress, but they remain common on heritage and industrial stationary engines.
