A snow tire is a winter-specific pneumatic tire engineered to maintain traction on snow and ice by using a rubber compound that stays pliable at temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius, where standard all-season rubber hardens and loses grip. The tread pattern includes numerous small cuts called sipes, typically 200 to 300 per tire, which bite into snow and ice crystals. The rubber itself contains more natural rubber and less carbon black than summer compounds, preserving elasticity in cold. A winter tire's tread depth is initially deeper than all-season equivalents, usually 10 to 12 mm rather than 8 mm, allowing longer retention of performance as the tire wears.
Snow tires perform best below 7 degrees Celsius; above that threshold, the softer rubber generates excess heat and wears rapidly. A winter tire on dry pavement at 15 degrees Celsius will lose 25 to 30 percent of its tread depth in a single season of normal driving, making them uneconomical for year-round use in temperate climates. Conversely, an all-season tire below freezing becomes dangerously hard, increasing stopping distance on ice by 10 to 20 meters from highway speed.
Snow tires are classified by regional winter severity standards. In North America, the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake rating indicates severe winter performance. European winter tires may carry the Alpine symbol or meet ISO 19620 testing. Studded tires, which embed metal pins into the rubber, offer superior ice grip but damage asphalt road surfaces and are banned or restricted in many jurisdictions. Friction-type snow tires without studs rely entirely on sipe geometry and compound to generate traction and are preferred where permitted.
Cost and ownership practice
A winter tire typically costs 15 to 30 percent more than an equivalent all-season tire. Many drivers in cold climates purchase a second set of wheels mounted with winter tires and swap them seasonally, preserving the all-season set and distributing wear across two sets. This practice extends the life of both sets and is standard in Northern Europe and Canada.Winter tires begin to lose their advantage at distances beyond 40,000 to 50,000 kilometers, when sipe density diminishes and rubber compound properties degrade. A winter tire worn to 4 mm tread depth retains only marginal grip advantage over an all-season tire, explaining the four-to-six-season lifespan typical for careful winter use. Tire pressure monitoring systems must account for compound stiffness: a properly inflated tire at minus 10 degrees Celsius will show lower pressure on a digital gauge than at 20 degrees, requiring adjustment during seasonal swaps.
