Space suppression is a printing control that prevents or reduces the automatic paper advance that normally occurs after each printed line. In standard operation, impact printers and line printers feed paper forward by one line height (typically 1/6 inch on 6 lines per inch forms, or 1/8 inch on 8 lines per inch) after depositing each row of characters. Space suppression overrides this default feed, allowing the printer to hold paper position or advance by a smaller increment, enabling multiple print passes on the same line or the compression of output onto fewer physical lines.

This feature is most commonly found in chain printers, drum printers, and other industrial line printers used for business reports, invoicing, and data processing. The suppression is typically triggered by control codes embedded in the print stream, such as carriage control codes sent from the host computer. A standard implementation might use a dedicated control channel separate from the character data, allowing the printer to distinguish between advancing to the next line and suppressing advance entirely.

Common applications and limitations

Space suppression enables several practical functions: overstriking (printing one character over another to create bold or composite symbols), condensing output vertically to fit more data on a single page, and printing forms with variable vertical spacing. However, the technique is limited by mechanical constraints. Repeated overstriking on the same line can cause paper jams, deteriorated print quality, or damage to the ribbon or print mechanism. Drum and chain printers rely on precise indexing, and holding paper position for multiple passes requires reliable mechanical locks that may not function flawlessly after thousands of cycles.

The term itself reflects the operational language of the era: "space" refers to the standard line advance (vertical spacing), and "suppression" means its cancellation or reduction. This vocabulary became embedded in control code standards such as the ASA (American Standards Association) carriage control standard used on IBM mainframe printers and compatible equipment throughout the mid to late twentieth century.

With the transition from impact line printers to laser and inkjet printing, space suppression became less relevant because digital printers do not rely on fixed mechanical advance steps. Modern printers position content anywhere on the page through software-controlled coordinates. The term persists mainly in legacy system documentation and in contexts where older equipment is still operated, particularly in data centers maintaining older mainframe installations.
