A spavin is the bed of stone or shale that forms the floor of a coal seam. Coal miners encounter it when they reach the bottom of the deposit they are working, and it marks the practical limit of extraction from above. The spavin may be relatively thin, sometimes only a few feet thick, or it can be substantially deeper. Its nature matters: a hard spavin of stone makes undercutting difficult, while a softer shale spavin can be worked more easily, though it may crumble or absorb water.
The term is most common in British colliery work, particularly in the older coalfields. Where American mining terminology might simply say "floor" or "base stone," British pit workers used spavin to distinguish the specific stratum beneath an active coal working. The word itself is thought to derive from a corruption of older mining language, though its exact origin is disputed among historians of mining vocabulary.
Practical considerations
The spavin's composition affects how coal is extracted and how safely the seam can be worked. If the spavin is unstable, moisture can migrate upward into the coal, affecting its quality and workability. Conversely, a firm spavin provides reliable roof support when coal is undercut from above. Miners also needed to distinguish spavin from coal itself, particularly in poor lighting conditions or when coal was highly fractured.
The depth and character of the spavin also influenced mine planning. Deep spavins meant greater haulage distances for extracted coal; weak spavins sometimes forced miners to leave coal unworked at the bottom of the seam to maintain roof stability. Records from pit surveyors often included spavin thickness and material type, since these data determined which areas could be profitably worked with available technology.
