In rail operations, to spot means to move a locomotive or car to a specific location on a track where it will be loaded, unloaded, coupled, serviced, or worked on. The spot is the destination, not the action itself; a crew spots a gondola car at the coal dock, or spots an empty boxcar at the warehouse siding. The precision required varies. At an industrial siding, spotting might mean positioning a car within inches of a loader chute. On a classification yard ladder track, spotting means placing a car in its assigned section, with less exacting tolerance.

Spotting is done by a locomotive working at low speed, typically under 5 mph, often with hand signals or radio instruction from ground crew. The locomotive couples to the car or cut of cars and nudges them into position. Switches may be thrown to route the movement into the correct track. Spotting differs from switching in scope: switching arranges multiple cars into train formations; spotting places a single car or small group where customers or other operations need it.

Many operational errors and safety incidents trace back to spotting mistakes. A car spotted in the wrong track may roll into a building or couple with unintended cars. A car spotted under a loader before proper braking and wheel chocking becomes a runaway hazard. Spotting in congested rail yards requires coordination with other movements and clear communication between locomotive operator and ground personnel who direct the maneuver.

The term itself carries industrial plainness. To spot an object has meant to place it in a specific spot since the 1800s in factory and rail work. In rail yards, spotting became standardized vocabulary because the action is routine, repeatable, and critical to efficiency. A customer waiting for an empty boxcar does not care about complex switching; they need a car spotted at their dock.

Spotting duties fall to yard crews, industrial switchers, or customer service locomotives. In busy yards, spotters (human workers who direct movements from the ground) work alongside spotting locomotives to ensure precision and safety. Modern installations may use radio-equipped remote controls to move locomotives for spotting operations, reducing personnel in the immediate work zone.
