stallman: the stall supervisor in underground mines
A stallman is a working foreman responsible for a specific stall or working place in an underground mine. The stall is a discrete section of the mine face or roadway where extraction or development work occurs, typically managed by one stallman who oversees the day-to-day operations, crew coordination, and output from that zone. The stallman reports to the pit manager or section manager and sits between the general laborers and the management hierarchy.
The stallman's core duties include task assignment, safety compliance, and maintaining production targets for the stall. In coal mines, a stallman might supervise a cutting machine operator, loaders, and haulers working a particular coal face section. In hard rock mines, the role covers similar ground: ensuring drills are positioned correctly, blast holes are charged to specification, and muck is cleared efficiently. The stallman must know the geological conditions of their stall intimately, as coal seam thickness, roof quality, or ore grade variation directly affect how work is organized.
Variants and regional use
The term is most common in British and Commonwealth mining traditions, particularly in coal mining. In some regions the role overlaps with what North American operators call a section foreman or stall boss, though these titles are not always interchangeable. Stallman appears less frequently in modern surface mining operations, where the organizational structure has shifted toward larger mechanized teams with different supervision models.
A stallman must balance production pressure against safety regulations and equipment maintenance. Poor roof conditions, equipment breakdowns, or crew absences force real-time replanning. The stallman's judgment on whether conditions are safe to advance, whether to adjust crew size, or when to call in specialists can directly affect productivity and incident rates. Experienced stallmen develop intuition about their stall's behavior: where the roof is weak, which equipment tends to jam, what time of shift fatigue becomes a factor.
