A star plate is a steel bearing plate with a distinctive star or multi-armed shape, bolted to the face of a structure (typically masonry, concrete, or timber) to receive and distribute the load from a tie rod. The radiating arms of the plate spread the concentrated force of the rod across a wider surface area, preventing the rod from pulling through or tearing the structural material. Star plates are fundamental in bracing systems that resist lateral movement, especially in facades, party walls, and temporary shoring.

The shape itself is engineered for load distribution. The arms typically extend 4 to 8 inches from a central hole, depending on the plate's rating and the substrate. The central bore accepts the threaded end of the tie rod, which is secured with a nut and washer on the back face. Plates are usually mild steel, ranging from quarter-inch to half-inch thickness, and are either welded or bolted to steel frames, or embedded in fresh concrete or brick.

Load capacity and substrate interaction

Capacity depends on three factors: the plate thickness and arm geometry, the material it bears on, and the bolt or anchor specification. A typical star plate might handle 10,000 to 25,000 pounds in tension, but masonry and concrete have their own crushing limits. A one-inch-thick brick backing may fail at a lower load than the plate itself can withstand, so the substrate must be verified before assembly. This is why larger star plates (with longer or wider arms) are used on weaker materials.

Installation errors are common and serious. If the plate is not fully bedded against the surface, or if the hole is drilled off-center, load distributes unevenly and can cause local crushing or cracking, especially in masonry. The nut must be tensioned firmly but not over-tightened, as excessive force can bend the rod or damage the threads. Corrosion is another concern; carbon steel plates in exposed conditions will rust and lose bearing area, so hot-dipped galvanizing or paint is standard for outdoor work.

Star plates sit between simple washers and elaborate fabricated brackets in the anchor hardware hierarchy. For light loads or temporary bracing, a plain washer suffices; for heavy or permanent work, custom engineered plates or mechanical anchors may replace the star plate. The term itself reflects the visual form rather than the function, making it memorable on site even though manufacturers may label the same component as a bear plate, rosette plate, or simply anchor plate.
