A type of boiler fitted in a diesel locomotive or another rail vehicle, which provided steam heating in steam-heated passenger trains that had previously been hauled by steam locomotives.

A steam generator is a compact boiler mounted on a diesel locomotive to produce steam for heating passenger cars. It replaced the need for steam locomotives on routes where passenger comfort required heated coaches during winter months. The device burns fuel oil (usually the same grade as the locomotive's diesel engine) to heat water and generate steam at low pressure, typically 80 to 100 psi, which is then piped through the train's coaches via a steam heating circuit.

Steam generators differ fundamentally from the main engine's boiler. They are small, self-contained units designed to run continuously while the locomotive is in service, independent of the diesel engine's operation. The burner uses either a simple oil atomizer fed by fuel pump or a more sophisticated gun that mixes fuel and compressed air. Water circulation relies on a feed pump and thermostatic expansion valve to maintain steam pressure and flow to the coaches without dropping the generator's internal pressure below operating limits.

Early steam generators on diesel-electric locomotives were often salvaged or adapted from steam locomotive boilers, but purpose-built units became standard from the 1930s onward. British Railways and European railways favored vertical or horizontal cylindrical designs with internal flue tubes and relatively small water capacity, typically 500 to 1500 liters. The burner compartment is isolated and insulated to minimize heat loss and prevent damage to surrounding structure. Larger units, fitted to mainline express stock, could maintain steam to twelve or more heated coaches; smaller versions on suburban trains might serve four to six.

One persistent weakness in steam generator design is water treatment. Scale and corrosion occur rapidly in low-pressure boilers, especially where water quality is poor. British Railways introduced softening equipment on many generators and established strict maintenance schedules. Sludge buildup reduces heat transfer, forces operators to blow down the boiler regularly, and eventually demands that the whole unit be removed and chemically cleaned or replaced.

Steam generators became obsolete as electric heating replaced steam on modern trains from the 1970s onward. Electric resistance heating is simpler, more efficient, safer, and requires no onboard combustion. By the 1990s, most mainline railways had withdrawn steam-heated coaching stock. However, preserved heritage railways continue to operate both steam and diesel locomotives with functional steam generators to maintain authenticity and comfort on tourist services.
