The steering column is a rigid or semi-rigid tube that transmits rotational force from the steering wheel down to the steering gearbox, which in turn moves the front wheels. It runs vertically or at an angle from the steering wheel through the dashboard and firewall, anchored to the vehicle frame. In modern cars, this column typically measures between 600 and 900 millimeters in length, depending on wheelbase and cabin layout.
The column houses several critical components beyond the simple shaft. An upper intermediate shaft connects the wheel to a lower shaft that passes through the firewall. Many columns incorporate a universal joint or flexible coupling to accommodate the angle change between the steering wheel plane and the gearbox input. Tilt and telescoping mechanisms allow adjustment of wheel position for driver comfort and safety, controlled by a lever or stalk on the column itself.
Collapse and safety design
Modern steering columns are designed to collapse or compress under frontal impact to reduce chest and abdominal injuries to the driver. The column typically has a series of breakaway sections or accordion-style crush zones engineered to fail at predetermined loads, usually between 1000 and 2000 newtons of force. This safety feature became mandatory in many markets during the 1970s and 1980s following crash testing research.
The column also serves as the housing for steering wheel controls and electrical connections. Wiring for horn, turn signals, headlight flashing, windscreen wipers, and cruise control typically runs through or alongside the column, routed to slip rings or spiral connectors that allow the wheel to rotate continuously without tangling cables. Airbag squibs and clockspring assemblies occupy the center hub area.
Wear typically develops in universal joints and intermediate shaft bushings, causing steering play or a clunking sensation when turning. Tilt mechanisms can become stiff or fail to lock, and the column jacket can develop cracks if a vehicle is hit from the side. Replacement is a labor-intensive job requiring removal of the dashboard trim, air bag systems, and often the entire steering wheel assembly.
