A system of working in ore, etc., when it lies not in strata or veins, but in solid masses, so as to be worked in chambers or stories.

Stockwork is a mining method used when ore occurs as a disseminated mass rather than as distinct veins or stratified layers. Instead of following a thin seam, miners extract ore from a large volume of lower-grade material by creating a grid of excavation chambers separated by pillars of waste rock. The chambers are typically worked in successive horizontal levels, or stories, allowing systematic extraction through the entire ore body.
This method suits porphyry deposits and certain massive sulfide bodies where valuable minerals are scattered throughout a large rock mass at relatively uniform concentration. Copper porphyries, for example, may contain 0.5 to 2 percent copper disseminated throughout millions of tons of rock. Underground stockwork mining creates a honeycomb structure: miners extract ore from rooms while leaving strategic pillars to support the overlying rock. As extraction proceeds downward, pillars can be progressively removed or left standing depending on stability requirements.
The defining characteristic is the chamber-and-pillar geometry. Unlike stope mining, which follows the geometry of a vein, stockwork imposes an artificial grid on the ore body. Pillar dimensions depend on rock strength, depth, and the economics of recovery. Weak ore or low grades may justify leaving wider, stronger pillars; rich ground allows narrower pillars and higher extraction ratios. Room heights typically range from 5 to 20 meters depending on equipment and the fragility of the hanging wall.
Variations and Decline
Selective underground stockwork mining has largely given way to block caving and open-pit methods for large disseminated deposits. Modern open pits can move waste and ore more economically over distances measured in kilometers. However, stockwork remains relevant where depth, stripping ratios, or environmental constraints favor underground extraction. Some operations use modified room-and-pillar layouts; others combine stockwork with sublevel stoping or longhole mining to handle lower-grade stockwork zones adjacent to higher-grade veins.
The term reflects its geological application: the ore exists as a stock, a large irregular mass, and the working method organizes extraction around that reality. Stockwork distinguishes itself terminologically from vein mining, stratified mining, and open-pit methods by explicitly naming the geometry of the excavated chambers and their supporting pillars.
