To strike a hot piece of metal, especially iron, with a mallet or other tool before it cools, while it is still hot enough to be shaped.

Strike while the iron is hot: forge metal before it hardens

When a blacksmith or metalworker heats iron or steel to working temperature, they have a narrow window of time to shape it. The metal becomes plastic, malleable, responsive to the hammer. Once it cools below a certain threshold, it hardens again and resists reshaping. The phrase describes the physical reality of the craft: you must work the piece now, while the metal is hot enough to move under the blow.

The effective temperature range depends on the metal. Iron begins to deform reliably around 700 degrees Celsius and works best above 900 degrees. Steel has a narrower window. As the metal cools, it becomes stiffer and less forgiving; below the critical temperature, further hammering risks cracking or cracking the grain structure rather than reshaping the form. A blacksmith learns to read color: bright cherry red, orange, yellow, and white heat indicate decreasing malleability and remaining time.

Reheating and multiple cycles

Most practical forging involves multiple heating cycles. The smith draws out a length, lets it cool slightly to a working heat, strikes again, then returns the piece to the fire when it stiffens. This is not failure; it is standard procedure. Each cycle extends the material and refines the grain. Rushing to finish in one heat, by contrast, often produces poor results: the metal becomes too cool mid-work, and hammering cold metal generates internal stress.

The expression entered common language because the principle is universal: opportunity has a window. In metalwork, that window is measured in seconds or a few minutes. Close the shop door and the iron cools. The master waits for no one. This is why apprentices were taught to work decisively, to have the next tool or hammer ready, to position the anvil within arm's reach. Hesitation costs heat, and heat costs time.
