A superband is a frequency range allocated for television signal transmission on coaxial cable networks in European cable television systems. It sits above the standard VHF and UHF bands, typically occupying the 300 MHz to 430 MHz region, allowing cable operators to carry additional television channels beyond what terrestrial broadcasting permits. The term reflects its position as an extension or "super" addition to the conventional broadcast bands.
European cable television architecture, particularly in systems built from the 1970s onward, was designed to maximize channel capacity within the bandwidth limits of copper coaxial cable. While terrestrial VHF (roughly 47 to 230 MHz) and UHF (roughly 470 to 862 MHz) bands carried broadcast signals, the superband provided a dedicated intermediate region for cable-exclusive programming. This approach was especially valuable in densely populated areas where terrestrial frequencies were congested but cable infrastructure could service many homes simultaneously.
The superband typically carries between 20 and 40 additional channels depending on the cable system's bandwidth and modulation scheme. Channels are usually 6 or 8 MHz wide, the standard for European television, and are assigned specific frequencies within the superband allocation. Headend equipment must be configured to insert, amplify, and monitor signals in this band separately from VHF and UHF signals, requiring distinct filtering and distribution components.
As digital television and cable modernization progressed from the 2000s onward, the distinct superband concept became less relevant. Modern cable systems typically use QAM modulation across continuous frequency ranges without the rigid band segmentation of analog systems. However, the terminology persists in documentation for legacy systems and in regions where older cable plant remains in service, and it remains a useful historical reference for understanding European cable network design.
The superband concept is almost entirely absent from North American cable television standards, where different regulatory frequency allocations and system designs produced alternative solutions. This geographical distinction reflects how cable television evolved differently across continents in response to local broadcast policies and technical constraints.
