A swivel is a mechanical coupling that allows one component to rotate continuously relative to another while maintaining a fixed connection. The mechanism consists of two parts (typically a ring, hook, eye, or shaft) joined by a pin or axle that serves as the rotation axis. The rotating part spins freely around this pin with minimal friction, while remaining permanently attached. This simple device solves a fundamental problem: transmitting load or force through a connection that must accommodate rotational movement without twisting up the line, cable, or pipe feeding into it.
Swivels are classified by their geometry and application. A ball swivel uses a spherical bearing surface to allow rotation in multiple planes simultaneously. A barrel swivel has cylindrical surfaces and rotates on a single axis, common in chain and rigging work. Hook swivels and eye swivels modify the attachment points to suit different load scenarios. Industrial swivels are rated by working load limit (WLL), typically stamped on the body, and range from small marine hardware rated at 5 to 10 tonnes to heavy-duty industrial versions handling 50 tonnes or more. Materials vary: stainless steel for corrosive environments, galvanized carbon steel for general duty, and occasionally brass or titanium for specialized needs.
The most common failure mode is jamming due to corrosion or debris accumulation, which prevents rotation and concentrates stress on the connection point. When a swivel is locked or corroded, the load twists the cable or chain instead of the swivel rotating, often resulting in kinking, breaking, or pulling of the attachment points. Bearing wear gradually increases friction and play. Overloading causes yielding of the pin or fracture at stress concentration points near the attachment eyes.
Swivels in practice
In lifting and rigging, swivels prevent a suspended load from rotating and tangling cables; a load hanging from a single chain will naturally spin as it settles, and the swivel above it absorbs that rotation. In towing and mooring, swivels protect anchor lines and tow cables from twisting into themselves. Swivels appear in plumbing and hydraulic systems to allow hoses to move without kinking. In fishing and marine work, they are essential for connecting leaders to main lines and preventing backlash during retrieval. The term comes from the verb swivel, meaning to rotate, and dates back to nautical practice where the hardware was first standardized.
Selection requires matching the WLL to the actual load, accounting for shock and dynamic factors. A rule of thumb in rigging is that the swivel WLL should exceed the breaking strength of the weakest attached component by at least 25 percent. Inspecting swivels before use is critical, especially in safety-critical applications like personnel lifting, because a failed swivel cannot be detected by visual inspection alone once the load is applied.
