To sypher is to plane or sand the chamfered edges of adjacent planks so they meet in a smooth, continuous plane. The term is most common in shipwrighting and heavy timber work, particularly where planks form structural surfaces like bulkheads or deck frames. The goal is a flush joint with no step or ridge where one plank's bevelled edge meets its neighbour's.
The work begins after planks are fitted edge-to-edge with their corners chamfered, typically at 45 degrees. A hand plane or scraper is then used to remove wood from the chamfer until the two plank surfaces align perfectly. On larger surfaces, a long jointer plane is essential to maintain a true plane across several plank widths. The angle and depth of the chamfer matter: too steep or too shallow, and the syphering becomes difficult or impossible.
Why the chamfer exists
Shipwrights chamfer plank edges before assembly as a safety measure. Sharp edges can splinter and cause injury during handling and assembly; a slight bevel eliminates that risk. But a chamfer left uncorrected creates an uneven surface that catches and holds water, and in bilge areas or on exterior surfaces, this leads to rot. Syphering removes that hazard.The work is labour-intensive and demands skill. A poor syphering job leaves visible steps or hollows that weaken the surface's appearance and function. The planer must work with the grain, adjust for the specific wood species, and maintain consistent pressure. On softwoods like pine, the plane cuts easily; on hardwoods like oak, resistance is high and tearout is common.
Syphering is less common in modern carpentry than it was in traditional shipbuilding, but it still appears in restoration work, high-end joinery, and any project where large timber surfaces must be both strong and smooth. The term itself is old and its origin is unclear, though some sources connect it to sythe or scythe work, referring to the sweeping motion of the plane.
