V2L: your car becomes a portable power station
Vehicle-to-load is a power delivery system that lets a vehicle supply electrical current to external equipment through a standardized connector. The car's onboard battery and inverter convert stored DC energy into AC power, typically 230V in Europe or 120V in North America, that can run household appliances, power tools, or site equipment. A V2L-capable vehicle acts as a mobile generator with the advantage of integrated safety systems and automatic load management.
The hardware sits between the car's high-voltage battery and the outside world. Most V2L systems use a modified charging port or a dedicated outlet on the vehicle body. Current implementations typically deliver between 1 kW and 3.6 kW continuous output, with peak power available for short periods. The car's onboard charger or a separate DC-AC inverter performs the power conversion, and integrated electronics prevent over-discharge of the battery and manage thermal limits.
Where it matters in practice
V2L finds use in construction sites where temporary mains power is not available, outdoor events, emergency backup during grid failures, and remote work locations. A single fully charged battery can sustain tools or lighting for hours depending on load. The appeal over a portable generator lies in the absence of fuel, fumes, and noise, factors that make battery-electric vehicles particularly suited to indoor or residential use cases.
The term emerged alongside vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) as battery-electric vehicle adoption widened. V2L requires less infrastructure than V2H or V2G because it needs only a connector and basic load management, not a bidirectional charger or grid synchronization. Early adopters include Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan, though the feature remains fragmented across manufacturers and regions.
Limitations include the finite state-of-charge of the battery, the cost of the charging cable and adapters, and draw on vehicle systems that would otherwise extend range. Continuous high-load use can generate heat that triggers thermal throttling. Where mains supply is available or where extended runtime matters, V2L serves as convenience rather than replacement for conventional power sources.
