A video conference is a synchronous communication session in which three or more participants at different physical locations transmit and receive audio and video streams simultaneously over a network connection. Unlike a simple video call between two parties, a conference distributes multiple video feeds, shared screens, and audio channels so that dispersed teams can conduct meetings, design reviews, or troubleshooting sessions as though they occupied the same room. The system requires adequate bandwidth, latency control, and codec standardization to maintain intelligible speech and readable visual content.
In electrical engineering practice, video conferencing hardware ranges from dedicated codec boxes with ISDN or IP interfaces (common in fixed control rooms and test facilities) to software-based implementations on general-purpose computers. Enterprise systems typically use H.264 or H.265 video compression to fit multiple simultaneous streams within available network capacity. Audio is usually handled separately from video, with echo cancellation and automatic gain control applied to prevent feedback and ensure audibility in noisy industrial environments. Bandwidth requirements vary: a single HD stream may consume 2.5 to 4 Mbps, but a six-person conference with screen sharing can easily demand 10 to 15 Mbps upstream and downstream.
Practical deployment and failure modes
Video conferences in technical trades must contend with electromagnetic interference, poor network conditions, and latency sensitive to packet loss. IP-based systems are vulnerable to jitter and packet reordering, which degrade video smoothness and create audio dropouts. Fixed installations in machine shops or substations sometimes require shielded cabling and prioritization protocols (QoS) to isolate conference traffic from industrial control data. Mobile or temporary setups over public broadband often fail during peak hours when network congestion exceeds 30 to 50 ms round-trip latency.
The term 'video conference' became standard in the 1990s as digital compression techniques and broadband penetration made multiparty transmission practical. Before that, point-to-point video telephone systems existed but required dedicated circuits and were too expensive for group use. Today the distinction between 'video conference' and 'video call' is informal rather than technical; the underlying protocols and equipment are often identical.
In industrial settings, video conferences serve specific functions: remote equipment commissioning, where an engineer at a manufacturer guides installation at a distant site; collaborative fault diagnosis, where specialists in different time zones review oscilloscope traces or thermal images in real time; and regulatory documentation, where meetings between clients, contractors, and inspectors are recorded and archived. The reliability expectation in these contexts is higher than in consumer or office use, because downtime can halt production or delay critical repairs.
