To vitriol is to immerse metal in dilute sulfuric acid, removing oxide scale, rust, and mill scale before further processing. The term comes from the historical name for sulfuric acid itself: oil of vitriol. In metallurgy, vitriolic pickling prepares surfaces for galvanizing, tinning, electroplating, or welding by exposing clean base metal underneath.
The acid concentration matters significantly. Typical pickling baths run between 5 and 15 percent sulfuric acid by weight, with temperature between 40 and 65 degrees Celsius. Steel, the primary metal vitriolic, descales in minutes to hours depending on scale thickness and acid strength. Cast iron and wrought iron also vitriol, but copper and copper alloys require different acids, hydrochloric acid or nitric acid, so vitriolic is not universal across the shop.
The process works by dissolving ferric oxides (Fe₂O₃) and ferrous oxide (FeO) that form during hot rolling, forging, or annealing. Hydrogen gas bubbles vigorously off the surface as the acid consumes the oxide layer. Once the scale comes away, immersion must stop promptly or the acid will begin consuming the steel itself, thinning edges and roughening the surface unnecessarily.
Common problems and controls
Over-pickling produces pitting and a dull, gray surface. Iron salts accumulate in the bath, reducing its strength; when ferrous sulfate concentration exceeds saturation, the bath "dies" and must be replaced or regenerated. Inadequate pickling leaves black scale behind, which will flake during subsequent heating and ruin plating adhesion. Ventilation is critical: sulfuric acid mist corrodes nearby equipment and damages lungs. Many shops have replaced immersion vitriolic with spray or fog pickling to reduce vapor generation.
After vitriolic, metal must be rinsed thoroughly in water, often with a weak alkali rinse to neutralize acid film. Many modern operations combine vitriolic with an inhibitor package that slows attack on bare steel, buying time for thorough rinsing. The spent acid liquor is a hazardous waste stream requiring neutralization and proper disposal, making vitriolic a regulated step in high-volume shops.
