A vehicle (wagon) designed to transport goods or people on railway.

A wagon is a railway vehicle built to sit on rails and be hauled by a locomotive. Unlike the engine itself, a wagon has no motor; it exists to carry payload, whether goods, passengers, mail, or water for steam locos. The word broadly covers everything from a flatbed bare enough for steel coils to an insulated box for perishables to a passenger coach with compartments.

Railway operators sort wagons by type. Freight wagons include open wagons (sides low or absent, suited to coal and ore), covered wagons (weatherproof boxes for grain and machinery), tank wagons (cylindrical pressure or gravity vessels for liquids and gases), well wagons (dropped centre for tall loads), and stake wagons (frame with removable posts). Passenger stock, the term preferred for coaches, comes as compartment stock (individual closed rooms along the side) or open-plan saloons. Speciality wagons exist for bulk cement, refrigerated goods, and hazardous cargo, each meeting specific certification rules.

Construction matters to duty. A wagon frame is typically steel. Wheel sets run on roller bearings and sit in a cast or fabricated steel suspension; older designs used leaf springs, modern ones coil springs or rubber blocks. Axle spacing and total weight govern track wear and traction limits. A typical four-wheel wagon sits on two axles; heavier wagons have two or three axle groups (bogies) to spread the load. Brakes are either mechanical (hand wheel, staff-operated) or air (Westinghouse or Knorr systems on passenger stock and modern freight).

Overloading or uneven loading damages wagons and track. Coupling is done by buffers and chain or automatic coupler: the Scharfenberg or tightlock couplers lock and uncouple by pilot arms, while older rod-and-chain work needs manual linking. Wheel flats, bearing wear, brake fade, and frame cracking are common field failures. Empty wagons in long consists can be unstable in curves if not braked correctly. Maintenance intervals depend on duty: suburban passenger stock runs daily and needs frequent wheel truing; seasonal freight wagons see longer downtime between turns.

The name wagon comes from Dutch and German roots and spread across English-speaking railways in the 19th century. In North America, the term car is standard instead. A wagon's place in a consist (train formation) is fixed by railway rules: loaded stock ahead of brakes, passenger coaches near the engine, dangerous goods well separated from occupied coaches. Tonnage per axle and brake force ratings determine how many wagons a locomotive can move on a given grade.
