A wake is the pattern of waves and disturbed water that forms astern of a ship moving through the water. It consists of two main features: the diverging waves that spread outward from the bow and quarters at roughly 35 degrees to the ship's course, and the transverse waves that run roughly parallel to the centerline. The wake's character depends on the ship's speed, hull form, and water depth, making it a visible signature of a vessel's movement and hydrodynamic behavior.
The diverging waves in a wake are generated by the bow pushing water aside as the hull advances; they remain visible for considerable distances astern and can be observed from aircraft or satellites. The transverse waves form because water accelerates around the hull and then falls back, creating a series of crests and troughs along the ship's path. In shallow water, the wake pattern changes dramatically, with waves becoming steeper and extending farther; this effect is one reason why large vessels behave differently in confined channels.
Practical significance for operators and shipyards
Wake characteristics matter in multiple contexts. Pilots and harbor masters use visible wake patterns to judge a ship's actual speed through water and detect steering problems; an asymmetrical wake may indicate damage to one side of the hull or rudder malfunction. Wake wash from high-speed vessels causes erosion along shorelines and can damage smaller boats and moored ships; many harbors now enforce speed restrictions in populated areas specifically to reduce wake energy.
In shipyard testing and trials, wake observations form part of acceptance trials for new vessels. Engineers measure wake patterns using instruments towed behind the hull or fixed observation points to verify that the ship performs to specification. The wake's scale and intensity also inform decisions about positioning alongside piers or other vessels, since a powerful wake can create dangerous conditions for small craft working nearby.
