In maritime work, weather refers to the side of a vessel, structure, or object that faces the oncoming wind. It is the opposite of lee, which is the sheltered downwind side. This distinction is fundamental to seamanship because the weather side experiences direct wind pressure, wave action, and spray, while the lee side is relatively protected. The term appears in dozens of compound words and phrases that every deckhand and ship's officer must understand instantly.

The weather side of a ship's hull receives the full force of sea state and gale conditions. Rigging, railings, and superstructure on the weather side are subjected to greater stress and corrosion from salt spray. Mooring lines, cargo securing points, and structural welds on the weather side are inspected and maintained more frequently because they degrade faster. In shipyard work, crews prioritize weather-side surfaces for coating systems, rust treatment, and replacement of corroded sections.

Application in ship handling and rigging

Anchoring, towing, and berthing operations depend on reading the weather. A tug approaching a disabled vessel must understand which side is weather to position itself effectively. Sailors speak of heaving to on the weather side, taking the weather gauge, and working to weather. Sails on a square-rigged vessel are trimmed differently depending on whether they face weather or lee. The weather rail of a sailing vessel heels down into the sea under pressure; the lee rail lifts. This geometry directly affects stability and steering.

Damage control teams aboard ship distinguish between weather-side flooding and lee-side flooding because water ingress from the weather side indicates an active breach under dynamic pressure, while lee-side water may indicate a slower seepage or internal failure. In shipyard survey work, inspectors document weather-side corrosion separately because progression rates and remediation costs differ significantly.

The word weather itself comes from the Proto-Germanic root for wind and storm; its use as a directional maritime term reflects centuries of practical seafaring language. It survives in modern naval architecture, merchant marine operations, and naval regulations because the windward side remains the side that demands the most attention and presents the greatest challenge to vessel maintenance and safety.
